Top 5 Favorite Book Covers

How dare you, Shanah! How dare you make me pick only 5 of my top favorite book covers for this week’s meme!

Here we go, y’all, be strap in and be prepared for a wild ride. I have this terrible feeling that I’m going to forget some book halfway through, and continue to come back and edit this a million times over the next few years. For now, though, these are my favorite covers.

I’ve decided to go with Series covers for this one (I may eventually come back and do individual covers!), because that way I don’t have to pick just five!

Okay, so I’m totally cheating here by posting the entire trilogy, but I think these book covers are just too good not to love! You’ve got Vader, Yoda, and Jabba the Hut (congrats on these guys for not copping out and putting Bikini Leia on the cover!), all dressed in Elizabethan fashion. I think that’s fantastic by itself. What makes the books even better, though, is that this is a legit retelling of the Star Wars stories, in pure Shakespearean Iambic Pentameter. For an English lit and Star Wars nerd like me, this is pure heaven. Even The Force Awakens has its own book out now, and you should certainly check these out if you’re a Star Wars fan who could never get into Shakespeare or a Shakespeare fan who could never get into Star Wars.

The Ex-Heroes Series

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a picture with all of the novels on it, but I’ll just leave you with the first four for now. I did a review of the first book a few weeks ago, and while they’re not the best-written books out there, they’ve still got plenty of zombie-killing fun. If you’re looking for a new twist on the outplayed zombie genre, I suggest taking a look at this series. I think it’s pretty great.

The Expanse Series

The sixth book releases in paperback this year and I’m so excited. I need to go back and reread these books (and review the first one for this blog!) very soon. I also need to probably buy a replacement for Cibola Burn, because I ended up damaging the cover at some point along the way. (I’m not even sure how!). I love space, and I love the way the cover designers depicted these.  I also love how the covers progressively get darker, following how much darker the books get over the series. My problem lies with the last three books: for whatever reason, they decided to make the author’s name HUGE and make the actual title small, so the first half and the second half of the series don’t match any more. That’s really what frustrates me: when you change up the covers halfway through and then you don’t have a matching set any more.

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

I’ve always been a fan of arcane symbols. I’ve never been able to draw any of my own (that’s probably a good thing, actually). It’s one of the reasons I like the FullMetal Alchemist manga series so much: the intricate summoning circles are incredible. I really enjoy the Nicholas Flamel series, and it’s even better that the book covers end up matching. I own all of these books save for the last one, and that one I’m hoping to acquire at some point in the near future. This is another series I want to reread and review for this site. I remember it being great when I was younger, but I’m hoping it still holds up over the years.

The Lord of the Rings

You didn’t think I could get all the way through a list of favorite book covers and not include The Lord of the Rings on that list, did you? This is actually my set of LOTR covers that I own, and while The Hobbit doesn’t quite fit with the rest, there are a few other books (The Unfinished Tales and The Silmarillion) that also match up with this set. I enjoy the ring symbols across the covers, and the imagery in gold foil behind those rings. I know there are prettier sets out there, but I find these covers to be gorgeous in their own right.

I want you to know that I spent the better part of an hour browsing through my GoodReads list to find these books. I still don’t think I’ve picked the right ones, but only time will tell with that.

Do you like any of these book covers? Do you think I should’ve chosen some different ones? (And what’s up with those people that change covers halfway through a series? Aren’t they the WORST?!) Let me know in the comments!

And as always, keep reading.
