Top 5 Series I Want to Start This Year

Welcome back to Top 5 Tuesday, a topic created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm! This week’s post deals with series books. I’m sure everyone has a series that they’ve talked about starting at some point in time, and this is going to be a list of the ones that I want to start this year.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at three new series I want to experience for the first time and two old series I want to reread!

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander

I actually own the entire set of the Chronicles of Prydain. I bought them years ago when I was working at Books-a-Million, and they’ve sat on my shelf ever since. I’m really not sure why I bought them in the first place; maybe my roommate told me that they were very good? At any rate, they’ve been sitting on the shelf since probably 2015, and I think that means it’s time for me to finally crack them open.

The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson

This is a series Steven recommended to me, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about it over the years as well. The first book is twelve years old this year, and it’s billed as a tale of love, loss, despair, and hope, which makes it sound pretty interesting to me. Here’s hoping it’s as good as people make it sound, right?

The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

I’ve totally hopped on the Bardugo bandwagon. As you can tell by this week’s book review, I’ve fallen completely in love with her style of storytelling. Unfortunately, they have recently redone all of these books in completely hideous covers. Like look at these.

Top: Original. Bottom: New.

Like who thought these would be a good idea? I’m not going to purchase these unless I can find the original ones for my collection. Anyway, I started reading Six of Crows and want to read about what happened before that duology took place.

The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien

Do I really need to reread The Lord of the Rings? Why, yes, yes I do. The last time I read this series all the way through was 2014, when I took a class on JRR Tolkien and had to read this series from start to finish. It was a fall semester class, so it was only 3.5 years ago instead of the full 4, but still…that’s a long time to go without reading one of my favorite book series all over again. I’ve attempted several times in the past few years to read through this series at least once a year (usually, my attempt starts in January and peters out by February due to all of the reading assigned by my school classes), but this is going to be the year I actually do it. 2018 is my year, y’all, and nobody is going to take it from me.

The Expanse by James SA Corey

I read this book series back in 2015, but a few new books have come out since then and I really want to reread the whole series before attempting to read the newest books, ya know? It’s been so long since I read the series that I don’t really remember what all went on in it. I also want to take a gander at the Amazon Prime series that has been created from this, and that requires me to have some sort of working knowledge of the world and the characters again.

I’m hoping 2018 allows me to have enough time to work through all of the series I want to get to this year. I know the first few months are going to be very hard, because I’ve got the Kurt Vonnegut books to read through (see my post from yesterday for more information on that!) as well as the books for my thesis work.

There are so many book series out there and there are so many new books that I want to take a look at, too. If you’ve got a series you want to recommend to me, let me know in the comments!

And as always, keep reading.

  1. Yay! Someone else who hasn’t read Mistborn! It makes me so happy to see that I’m not the last person on earth who hasn’t gotten to it. The Expanse series is one I’ve had my eye on for the longest time but I never took the plunge. Maybe one day I’ll add it to my wish list. Fantastic list here 🙂
    Thanks for participating 🙂

      1. Yes, it is. The first book is Leviathan Wakes. I’ve wanted to watch the TV show, and I’ve seen the first two episodes, but it had been so long since I’d read the books that I was a little lost. I want to reread the books, watch the series, and then see how the two compare.

    1. I read them for the first time my freshman year of college. Somehow I got all the way through high school without reading the books OR seeing the movies, but I quickly corrected that in 2012. I’ve only read them through twice, and the last time was three years ago, so I really want to do that this year…

  2. I once started the Hobbit and got half way through only to stop and never pick it back up. One of the few books I have started and never finished! I wouldn’t mind going back and rereading them!

I also want to read the Grisha series! I read the duology Six of Crows and am interested to see how that world plays out!! (Heck, I probably should have read those first!)
