I am pleased to tell you that this is my very last day working in retail.
You read that right: I am no longer going to be in Retail Hell. I have ascended to a higher plane of existence. Here’s what happened: a few months ago, I interviewed for a receptionist position in the big city near my college town. I didn’t make it, but the lady felt so bad for me that she kept finding me similar positions. Cut to just over a month later: she had a position open up that fit my qualifications to a T (apparently, the reason she didn’t hire me for the receptionist position was because I was overqualified.) I got the call Tuesday, interviewed Wednesday, and was offered the job on Thursday. I immediately put in my week’s notice (they want me to start April 16!) and started apartment-hunting.
A week later, I’m tying up the strings on a new apartment (I’m moving back with my parents for a few weeks between the end of my current lease & the beginning of my new one), have signed some hiring paperwork, and have managed to get the majority of my life in order. I have no idea what I did, but all I know is that sometimes one door closes so that another can open. (Yes, I did just use that cliche.)
I have zero experience in the job I was hired to, but that doesn’t matter, according to them. I am willing to learn and am willing to make the effort to get things 100% right. This position isn’t quite what I went to school for, but I know that it will all work out in the end. It sounds like a wonderful place to me and I honestly can’t wait for my first day. (I even went out and bought two new purses today because I was so excited; I haven’t had a new purse in over two years!)
So, to sum up: I’ve acquired a full-time, 8-5, weekdays-only job in a similar field to what I went to school for (I will be writing/editing things alongside other duties), with a company that has consistently been voted one of the top 100 places to work in the US. My first day is Monday.
Y’all, I am so excited. I can’t say that I’ll be able to update my blog as regularly as I would like (like I’m doing that now anyway — these last few months have been absolutely brutal, and I’m sorry, especially as I’m coming up on my first blogaversary!), but I have finally broken out of retail/fast food and things are finally starting to look up.
Good luck to everyone else out there that’s job searching. You can do it.
And as always, keep reading.
