Halfway Point!

Can you believe it’s July? I still can’t. And yet we’re here on July 12, and I’m writing a post halfway through the year.

Back in January, I wrote a post welcoming in the new year, and had a list of goals in the post as well. Let’s see how I’m doing on those goals from this year:

In 2018, I am going to find my first “big girl” job. I’m hoping for something in the editing field, but I will take a secretarial position as long as it gets me out of fast food/retail!

Status: Accomplished! I started my first “big girl” job on April 17, and I’ve now been there for almost three months! In fact, my official title is indeed “legal secretary,” but I’m making so much more than I thought I would. It all started out as a fluke, too. I originally applied to be the secretary at this company, and I didn’t get that job. The hiring manager kept sending me to other places that had secretary positions open, and then a few weeks later she called me back and said, “I know you have no experience, but I’ve got this job opening, and with your English degrees I think you’d be a good fit.” She called me on a Tuesday, I interviewed Wednesday, and she called me to tell me I got the job on Thursday. I nearly had a heart attack, and was so, so happy. I immediately put in my one-week notice to Chick-fil-A, and the rest, as you can say, is history.

I spend my day doing regular secretary duties, but I’m learning so much about stuff that I never thought I’d do before. I’m gaining valuable real-life experience and I’m at one of the more prestigious law firms in the city. I’m so excited, and everyone says I’m doing so well!

In 2018, I am going to move to my third apartment. I still have no idea where or when yet, but I am hoping it’s something I can afford by myself and not have to have a roommate for.

Hey, this happened, too! It may have taken a little longer than I intended for it to happen (I moved out of Montevallo on April 22 and moved into my apartment on May 19, just getting my furniture on June 28), but everything went great. I love living by myself. I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. It’s glorious. I’ve got a full-size bed now, an amazing closet, and a  great plant corner. In fact, I’m hoping to take some pictures and upload them here once I get the place cleaned to my satisfaction.

The funny thing is, I wasn’t even looking at this particular apartment complex when I started looking at apartments way back in March. I was looking at things almost $300 a month cheaper as my starting rate. I’m paying $848 a month, but that includes cable, internet, amenities fee (on-site gym, pool, private movie theater, etc.), and trash fee. The base rent is $750.

It’s in a wonderful location, too: 10 miles from my job, 5 miles from Steven, and about 11 miles from my parents (where I’m still going every two weeks to do laundry because I don’t have a washer/dryer yet…).

In 2018, I am going to work in improving my X-Wing game. I’m going to a sort of competition in February, and the guys from the comic shop want to see me “stomp some neck beards,” etc. It should be a great time.

I ended up getting 96th place (out of 135) in the Atlanta February regional, placed 7 (out of 14) in the local store kit, got fifth place with my team in the Atlanta Team Tournament, and will also be going to the Excelsior Store Championship on Saturday.

I’ve learned a lot, but I’ve still got so much to learn. The second edition of this game is coming out in September (I think?), and everyone is going to have to relearn things, so maybe that will be my chance to come out on top.

I’m also going to be going to a tournament in Los Angeles in November! Can you believe it? I’ve never been to California before, and I’m going with Steven & two of our friends.

In 2018, I am going to work on doing the PopSugar Reading Challenge. I still have to go back and plan all of the books I am going to read for it, but I am excited. Challenges get me going.

Ahhh. I don’t even want to get started on this one, considering how few books I’ve read this year. Aside from the books required for class, I’ve probably read less than a dozen books on my own so far. It’s really depressing. I just don’t have time to sit and read. I’m hoping that once I get everything organized and figure out exactly where I am in my job, things will get a little easier. We’ll see, I guess.

In 2018, I am going to finally get myself back into shape. I don’t know how I’m going to accomplish this yet, but it’s something…

I’m counting this one as a big fat fail right now. I weigh almost ten pounds more than I did in January. I’ve gained so much weight, and every time I look at myself I just want to cry. I need to get myself back into the habit of working out. I found my yoga mat in my closet at my parents’ house and brought that back with me to my apartment. I’m going to try yoga again, and since there’s an incentive (a $500 incentive, mind you) with my new job to be in shape, I’m going to start at least walking. I might end up buying a new pair of shoes and going running again. All of my weight is in my stomach area, so that’s what I’ve got to work on before anything else. Anybody got any tips on this one?

Looks like there’s really only two (maybe 2.5) goals that I still have left for the end of the year! I am going to get myself in shape and I am going to start reading more books for myself, too.

Also, this post marks exactly one month until my twenty-fourth birthday. You better believe I’m going to do a Year 23 accomplishment post on that day!

What about you? How has your year gone so far? Are you doing better than you thought you would? Let me know in the comments!

And as always, keep reading.

  1. I love how you call it your first “big girl” job 🙂 That’s what my daughter calls it too. She graduated college last year and landed her first big girl job. I didn’t think anyone else called it that, lol. But it’s perfect! Great job on your resolutions, and happy early 24th bday!
