I spent this morning reading through my WordPress reader and trying to figure out the best way to do a wrap-up post. I still haven’t figured it out, but I’m going to give it my very best try.
First of all, here’s my “Happy New Year” post from January 1. I remember writing it, but I don’t remember exactly what I’d put in the goals section. Going back and reading, I was absolutely amazed to see that I had hit nearly every single goal this year.
Let’s do a recap.
In 2018, I am going to find my first “big girl” job. I’m hoping for something in the editing field, but I will take a secretarial position as long as it gets me out of fast food/retail!
Status: Accomplished! On April 17, 2018, I started a new job. It’s technically a secretarial position (although the office lead wants to have “legal secretary” changed to “legal assistant,” since we do much more than just secretarial work), but I’m also editing and writing and learning so many new things. It took me several months to find the job, and it ended up just falling into my lap at the end. I am in love with my job and the workplace, and I feel like it’s a good place to stay and work up over the years. There’s definitely room to learn more and move up more, and I’m very excited to see where this goes.
In 2018, I am going to move to my third apartment. I still have no idea where or when yet, but I am hoping it’s something I can afford by myself and not have to have a roommate for.
Status: Accomplished! I moved into my third apartment on May 19, 2018, and it’s one that I’m able to afford all by myself. I had to have accounts set up in my name for the first time ever (water, electricity, and internet) and it’s 100% my space. I will admit I find it harder to keep it clean because I’m not sharing it with anyone, but hey, we all have our vices. I even received a nice gift card to Rooms to Go as part of my apartment signing bonus, and was able to get a bed, dresser, desk, mattress, and couch for my apartment! I’m absolutely in love with the furniture and while the apartment is a little further from my job than I think I’ll go when my lease is up, I finally have my own space to do whatever I want!
In 2018, I am going to work in improving my X-Wing game. I’m going to a sort of competition in February, and the guys from the comic shop want to see me “stomp some neck beards,” etc. It should be a great time.
Status: Accomplished! If you had told me back in January that I would be flying out to Los Angeles for a weekend to compete in an X-Wing tournament, I would have called you crazy. But I did it this year! I took a cross-country trip with my boyfriend and another couple to the Mynock Open in Burbank, California and loved every second of it (even though I didn’t make day two and instead got a super terrible sunburn on the beach that day instead). I’ve been to Atlanta three times (once for the regional in February, once for the Team Tournament in June or July, and once for another event in August) to play X-Wing, too. I’m having an amazing time with this game, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me in the next year.
In 2018, I am going to work on doing the PopSugar Reading Challenge. I still have to go back and plan all of the books I am going to read for it, but I am excited. Challenges get me going.
Status: I was doing a challenge?? Okay, so while I remember saying that I was going to do this, and even remember writing out a list of books that I might think about reading for the challenge, I never did it. I didn’t have time! I was reading thesis materials for about ten months straight, and once I finished with those, I was catching up on other books that I had bought and hadn’t started yet. I don’t think I got anywhere close to finishing this challenge (or finishing my GoodReads challenge of 100 books), and I’m on the fence about setting a reading challenge for myself for next year. We’ll see how things go.
In 2018, I am going to finally get myself back into shape. I don’t know how I’m going to accomplish this yet, but it’s something…
Status: In progress! I posted about this on the November wrap-up, but now I’m glad to say that I’ve moved out of the pre-training stage and into the full program for this thing called Body Boss. While I haven’t lost a lot of weight (mostly because I don’t eat that well, especially on the weekends when I’m out with Steven), I have noticed a significant difference in the way I feel. While getting out of bed at 5:15 a.m. to work out on Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays isn’t ideal, it’s also quickly becoming a habit. Yes, my legs and arms have been sore, and yes, sometimes getting out of bed is hard. But I know that I want to see this program through to the end. I even ordered a stationary bike (a folding one, mind you) for my apartment, but that requires me to clean a little more before I’m able to set it up. I’m so excited, you have no idea. And if you’d told me last January that I would have purchased a weight set and a folding bike before the end of the year, I would have called you crazy. As-is, though, I’m very happy with the lifestyle changes I’m making, and I can’t wait to see this program through to the end! (My end date is March 22!)
And now, on to something that wasn’t exactly a “goal,” but…
In another very exciting piece of news, I am going into 2018 with a new boyfriend. We kicked off the new year by watching movies in a blanket fort with champagne and popcorn. I am so excited for what the future will hold with this guy, and I think I might have finally found someone who can match me in so many ways.
Steven & I celebrated one year on December 23rd. It has been the most incredible year, between a birthday trip to Asheville to a cross-country trip to LA to just kicking around Birmingham, this has been the best year I have ever had. I can’t believe I’ve spent the whole thing at his side, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.
What else happened in 2018?
I successfully defended my thesis and graduated with a 4.0 and a Masters in English from the University of Montevallo! I know, I know, there was a whole blog post about this a bit ago, but I’m still geeking out over the fact that I’m done with school forever. It’s like, what do I do with my life now? But remember, back in February I was told that I wouldn’t be able to graduate in May, and it felt like my life had fallen apart briefly. I picked myself up and went into the rest of my thesis with severe determination, and I think I made it even better than before.
I didn’t work on my blog as much as I wanted. I really tried, honestly, but as work got busier and my social life picked up (I have friends, now, y’all), it got harder to blog. This is something I want to try and remedy in 2019, and it should be a little easier since I’ll be able to read more on my own.
I became much more environmentally-conscious. I’ve started using reusable bags (I keep one in my purse at all times and like 10 others in my car trunk), I’ve started using stainless steel travel mugs and taking them already-full to fast food restaurants so I don’t have to get a drink there, I bought some wool dryer balls, I’ve started carrying my own silverware around in my purse (although I need to figure out where I put the knife that came in the kit), and I’ve started using stainless steel straws to the fullest (mom even got me a set of 12 for Christmas!). While I still have a bit to work on with Steven (stop using plastic bags!), I’m feeling much better about myself. Sure, some of the choices I’m making are a little pricier than using single-use plastic, but overall I feel much better about the way my life is going.
In short, 2018 has blown every other year out of the water, and I can’t wait to see how 2019 stacks up.
That’s the problem, though — how do you follow up something amazing? I guess we’ll see.
I hope you had an amazing 2018, and I can’t wait to see how our lives intersect in 2019. Happy new year, everyone.
And as always, keep reading.
